The wheels have been set in motion. There’s no looking back.
In the span of a few months last summer, I had the vision for the farm, convinced my husband that this was a good idea, and closed on the purchase of 155 acres of raw land.
So, uh, now what do we do?
Glad you asked!
First thing’s first, we need to get a camper or tiny house on wheels on the property. The land has no infrastructure – water, electric, septic, fuel – nothing! So we need some type of structure that is off-grid that we can stay in while we begin to delve into this project.
Once we get on the land, we will need to begin to clear out the brush and over-growth so that we can literally just see what we are working with. From there, we need to begin to develop water and solar systems. I also hope to get an orchard started, even if initially on a small scale. Fruit trees take on average 5 years to produce so the sooner we can get some going, the better.
Here are some pictures of what we’re starting with.

It’s rough land and frankly, not pretty. But I hope to go from this:

to this:

We have a long road ahead of us and there is part of me that feels like I bit of more than I can chew. But we will press forward!
Have you ever managed a project like this? Tamed wild land? Built a farm from scratch? What advice can you give me in this planning stage of development?
Please leave your comments and advice below.
Be the change-
