Where Do We Begin?

The wheels have been set in motion. There’s no looking back.

In the span of a few months last summer, I had the vision for the farm, convinced my husband that this was a good idea, and closed on the purchase of 155 acres of raw land.

So, uh, now what do we do?

Glad you asked!

First thing’s first, we need to get a camper or tiny house on wheels on the property. The land has no infrastructure – water, electric, septic, fuel – nothing! So we need some type of structure that is off-grid that we can stay in while we begin to delve into this project.

Once we get on the land, we will need to begin to clear out the brush and over-growth so that we can literally just see what we are working with. From there, we need to begin to develop water and solar systems. I also hope to get an orchard started, even if initially on a small scale. Fruit trees take on average 5 years to produce so the sooner we can get some going, the better.

Here are some pictures of what we’re starting with.

It’s rough land and frankly, not pretty. But I hope to go from this:

Where Do We Begin 2

to this:

Where Do We Begin 4

We have a long road ahead of us and there is part of me that feels like I bit of more than I can chew. But we will press forward!

Have you ever managed a project like this? Tamed wild land? Built a farm from scratch? What advice can you give me in this planning stage of development?

Please leave your comments and advice below.

The Vision

Welcome to The Giving Farm website!

The Giving Farm was inspired by the idea that people can transform their lives at any point in time.

My family has been on an amazing adventure for the past six years. We have lived abroad, traveled to more than 40 countries, and (sort of) learned to speak a few new languages along the way. We have met fascinating and amazing people and become culturally enriched beyond what we ever imagined.

But now it’s time to shake things up!

In a hotel room in Lisbon, the idea for The Giving Farm was born. Essentially this – buy a bunch of raw land and transform it into a farm with the main purpose of feeding people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to fresh, organic, healthy food.

I believe that eating plants can change lives and proper nutrition shouldn’t depend on the size of one’s bank account. I intend to do what I can to move the needle in the right direction and to be the social change that I want to see in this world. No more waiting around for government or someone else to take action.

But I need your help! The Giving Farm is in the embryonic stages of development and I need you to join and help support the mission of feeding those in need in a healthy and sustainable way.

My family and I have achieved the first big milestone towards this goal and purchased 155 acres of raw, undeveloped land in New England. Yes, 155 acres!

Now we’re on a journey to move back to the U.S., build a farm, and transform our own lives and the lives of those in need.

Join us on our journey!
